National Grid, as the electricity system operator (ESO) for Great Britain (GB), is looking to investigate the market available technologies for the provision of a system-measured real-time signal of GB’s inertia. The current methodology at National Grid, is to continuously forecast an estimate of the total inertia in the power system, up to 36 hours ahead. The current methodology at National Grid is to continuously forecast an estimate of the total inertia in the power system, up to 36 hours ahead. Inertia in GB is forecast using two distinct elements: The 1st component is determined by summating all the known inertia from the synchronised generation on the GB transmission system. A 2nd component of inertia is determined for the distribution system (residual inertia), using a constant adjustment factor for the known GB demand. Both inertia components are summated, to determine a value for total GB system inertia. A real-time value of system inertia is later calculated using the same approach, by using actual system conditions. The total GB inertia figure is then used to determine. For the avoidance of doubt this RFI is not being used as a call for competition and therefore will not be used to pre-select a shortlist of vendors.
