Tender description
The Manor of Boston was created by King Edward I c1280, and held by the priory of St. Helen in Bishopsgate until 1538. The landscape is the setting for the Grade 1 listed Jacobean Boston Manor House build by Lady Mary Reade in 1623. In 1670 it became the Clitheroe family home until 1923, when the house and surrounding 20 acres were purchased by Brentford Urban District Council, opening as a park in 1924. It contains a lake, walled garden, woodland, meadowland, riverside and canal walkways, an accessible island, and amenities including tennis courts, play areas, football pitches and multi-use games area (MUGA). The bowling pavilion is run as a small café. The Reconnecting Boston Manor Park project aims to transform Boston Manor Park: conserving the Grade II historic structure of the park including the park wall and gates and interpreting an appropriate landscape for the Grade I listed Boston Manor House; consolidating the significant biodiversity offer; and providing activities and facilities that better serve the local community and stakeholders. The emerging Masterplan sets out ambitious proposals to enable both local communities and new audiences to discover and reconnect with this fascinating historic landscape, tripling visitor numbers to 60,000, and increasing regular volunteers. We will ensure people are put back into the heart of the estate through: new governance; engaging interpretation; creating access to the heritage; a new activity hub; improving design; managing and developing planting; increasing nature conservation value; providing a digital offer; partnering with local businesses; and delivering a programme of activities, learning, training and volunteering to provide a sustainable future for the estate. The site, buildings and wider estate were purchased by the Local Authority during 1924 and are now owned by the London Borough of Hounslow. The facilities are managed by a third party contractor on behalf of the Local Authority. There is a well-established 'Friends of Boston Manor' group which has ensured that the park is valued locally, with a focus on community activity and volunteering. The future management and operation of the House will be reviewed during the period of the project. The reconnecting Boston Manor Park project is a jointly funded initiative between the London Borough of Hounslow, the Heritage Lottery Fund [HLF] and other generous funders. The project has received a Round 1 pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund, who has provided initial funding for the development stage works. The London Borough of Hounslow now wishes to obtain competitive tenders for and to appoint a Quantity Surveyor for RIBA (2013) Work Stages 2 to 7, with a break-point after RIBA 3, subject to funding.
