Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust wishes to purchase a system to deliver laser interstitial thermal therapy to the brain. This is a system that is used to ablate pathological tissue within the brain with the aim of curing epileptic seizures. The technique involves accurate placement of a fine laser catheter in the brain and then monitoring of the ablation volume in real time using MRI imaging techniques. This technique has been available in the US for over 10 years and multiple publications have demonstrated efficacy and safety. Only one such CE licensed commercial system is available for clinical use in Europe. This system is manufactured by Medtronic and we therefore wish to purchase this system.
