Network Rail wishes to undertake a soft market testing exercise to engage with the supply market to assess the level of interest and considerations in the design of a vehicle positioning system to fit to Network Rail’s fleet of new stoneblower on-track machines. The requirements are for the supply of a system which provides continuous spatial and linear positioning information in terms of engineer’s line reference (ELR), track ID (TID) and mileage to an accuracy of within 1 m. Network Rail will be assessing the market, looking for a system: — capable of maintaining its accuracy in areas of poor satellite coverage such as tunnels and cuttings, and in typical environmental conditions encountered on the UK railway, — robust enough to withstand the levels of shock and vibration that occur in service on an on-track machine and shall be certified to BS EN 61373 for category 2 mounted equipment, — compact; it is preferable that it is not rack mounted, — fully functional and maintain positional accuracy in each of the stoneblower’s operating modes (travel and work).
