The BBC runs one of the world’s largest and most popular digital portfolios. It is regularly top 3 in terms of UK visitors, with only Google and Facebook having a consistently larger audience. It is also the only UK website that is in the world’s top 100, testament to the strength of the BBC’s brand, its foresight in digital and its strong individual sites and products. The BBC is continuing to invest and grow its digital capabilities, and will increasingly be using data to help power the audience experience. Data will be used to generate competitive advantage and will underpin the BBC’s success in digital and its traditional channels. The BBC’s digital analytics system is the major source of online behavioural data, data which will increasingly power segments and models, recommendation engines, outbound comms and audience insight. The current digital analytics system captures more than 300 000 000 000 events every year and is used by 1 500 users annually. These users query the current system 3,5 mn times per year (or 7 queries every minute), of which more than half are generated via the various APIs. Any supplier will need to cope with these volumes and their associated spikes.
