DFID Jordan is designing a new English language programme which will not only aim to improve English proficiency but will also focus on transferable skills such as technological literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership. We are considering a 7-10 year programme that has three main components: 1) Transformational change within the school system enhancing English language proficiency of students and teachers. Options to focus on early years or secondary education or both. 2) Community and youth learning — Outside the classroom enhancing English language proficiency of targeted learners, changing perceptions and reducing barriers to learning English. This will have a large focus on both technology and the media. 3) Monitoring, evaluation and Research. The UK will support the Ministry to design a large scale English language programme in Jordan. Learning, understanding, and being able to speak English opens up a world of opportunities, especially in the globalised economy of today.
