Tender description
The existing footbridge that spans the A307 as it passes beneath the railway lines at Kingston station will be demolished by specialist contractors and replaced with a new steel bridge in the summer (2018). The new cycle and pedestrian bridge and the improved link to Kingston Bridge and will better enable cyclists to avoid travelling through the town centre pedestrian zone. The wider bridge will reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge replacement is part of the Go Cycle programme funded entirely by the TfL mini-Hollands programme. The cycle bridge forms part of the station access (colloquially known as LM1a) contract package. It is complementary to the (LM1) Station Forecourt and Hub, and (NW2) Connectivity to Kingston Bridge design projects previously tendered and awarded to engineering and design consultants Buro Happold. The new cycle bridge is conceived as a continuation of the paths leading from the Station Forecourt and new cycle hub building in the East to the Skerne Road junction in the West. The gradients of these paths continue over the bridge to create a gentle camber. Two overlaid trusses continue the idea of crossing elements and add a directionality to the structure, enhancing the sense of movement. The connection details between the trusses and tie beams have been developed to give the impression of the structure wrapping around the pathway. As stated above the proposed bridge width is designed to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians, replacing the existing narrow bridge and improving access gradients on the approaches. The bridge is a key element of the new green link which is a landscaped corridor leading towards the river. The purpose of this procurement is to seek approval to source and appoint a contractor to fabricate, transport and install the designed elements of the cycle bridge along with lighting and ancillary civil engineering work.
