Tender description
Preventing death and injury caused by Landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERWs) – This programme will build on the previous programme, Global Mine Action Programme, to minimise death and injury to civilians from exploding landmines and ERWs in Cambodia, South Sudan, Somalia, Zimbabwe and Burma. These weapons instil fear in communities, whose citizens often know they are walking in mined areas, but have no possibility to farm other land, or take another route to school. When land cannot be cultivated and when medical systems are drained by the cost of attending to landmine / ERW casualties, it is clear that these weapons not only cause appalling human suffering, but that they are also a lethal barrier to development and post-conflict reconstruction. In 2015 the global casualty rate was 6 500, with the death rate at approximately 25%. Without continued work on demining and Mine Risk Education, these figures will rise significantly.
