Tender description
Design and Manufacturing support in respect of a cryogenic pumping system for a Double Neutral Beam Injection System. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. UKAEA requires a cryogenic pumping system for a new Double Neutral Beam Injection system with a pumping speed in the region of 1500 m3/s. The vacuum vessel to be pumped is approximately L3 m x W2 m x H3,5 m in size. The pumping panels will be mounted inside the vessel on the 2 opposite walls which are 3 by 3,5 m. The system must be ultra-high vacuum compatible. Recent project discussions have highlighted that the broad scope described in the December 2017 PIN (2017/S 174-355828) requires refining. This has led to further revision of our strategy to best approach the complexity of the task and the wide range of interfaces required between UKAEA and a consultant. UKAEA believe that the successful delivery of the system requires strong collaboration with organisations that have extensive experience of cryopump design and analysis. UKAEA has sufficient in-house capability to perform the baseload engineering tasks but intends to procure the more specialised tasks (such as pumping simulation and cryopanel design) from organisations that have proven experience of NBI cryopump design and manufacture. UKAEA will therefore lead the project and procure external consultancy to provide technical support at key stages over the course of the project. Examples of work that UKAEA anticipates the consultant to produce as part of this support package include: — design of cryopanel and radiation shield arrangement that will achieve the required pumping speed (validated by modelling / experiment). Any highly specialised analysis essential to cryopump functionality, including thermal and structural, — heat transfer modelling and NBI cryogenics optimisation, — CAD modelling of cryopump (including final Catia V5 model), — any necessary bespoke performance testing (e.g. flow testing, specific mechanical testing), — qualification of specialised manufacturing techniques (e.g. hydroforming and charcoal coating of cryopanels). This PIN has been published to enable market research to commence to assess the reaction of the market to the proposed requirement. UKAEA will conduct a dialogue with the marketplace. This may result in a call for competition based on the content of the requirement achieved through the dialogue.
