Tender description
UKBIC is part of the UK government’s Faraday Battery Challenge. On the 29.11.2017, it was announced the consortium of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and WMG, at the University of Warwick,had been awarded 80 000 000 GBP, through a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre and supported by Innovate UK, to establish a new national facility. Opening in 2020, the UKBIC delivers on the UK’s Industrial Strategy’s “Future of Mobility” Grand Challenge. It fills a strategic gap in the UK — facilitating scale up to high volume processes for battery materials, cells, modules and packs primarily for the automotive sector but with wider application. The planned cell production lines will be used to develop and prove materials, cell designs, manufacturing processes and parameters “at rate” prior to full plant investments. Electrode production: Tasks / Machines for Anode Manufacturing Line: — Mixing, — Coating, — Drying, — Re-reeling, — Calendering, — Slitting, — Vacuum Drying. Tasks / Machines for Cathode Manufacturing Line: — mixing, — coating, — drying, — re-reeling, — calendering, — slitting, — vacuum drying. The listed tasks for anode and cathode manufacturing should also be able to be performed on another smaller experimental line. Machines for this are also to be considered. Cell Assembly (Pouch): For the battery pouch cell production the following steps in the cell assembly are planned to be procured. In best case the whole assembly area is offered as a turnkey solution: — notching, — stacking, — tab welding, — foil pouch drawing, — sealing, — electrolyte filling, — electrolyte distribution, — insertion tray. The listed tasks should also be able to be performed on another smaller experimental line. Machines for this are also to be considered. Cell Assembly (Cylindrical): For the cylindrical cell assembly, the following steps in the cell assembly are planned to be procured. In best case the whole assembly area is offered as a turnkey solution: — winding, — bottom insulator insertion, — deep-can anode tag welding, — top insulator insertion, — spin-forming, — electrolyte vacuum filling, — top cap welding, — gasket insertion and top cap crimping, — wrapping and Labelling, — insertion tray. Cell Finish (Pouch): For the cell finish of the pouch cells the following tasks / Machines are needed: — pre-aging / tempering, — contacting, — formation, — degassing and resealing, — edge Folding, — ageing, — end-of-line testing, — labelling and packing. The listed tasks should also be able to be performed on another smaller experimental line. Machines for this are also to be considered. Cell Finish (Cylindrical): For the cell finish of the cylindrical cells the following tasks / Machines are needed: — pre-aging / tempering, — formation, — ageing. — end-of-line testing, — marking and packing. This early procurement relates to long lead time cell manufacturing equipment. Additional procurement activity will be released later which may include but is not limited to: clean / dry rooms, module / pack assembly, common engineering systems, ICT solutions. Within the project we are aiming at a common engineering strategy in terms of measurement and testing, control systems, digital backbone and automation. The commonality for each of these key elements should be as high as possible.
