TP17/031 - Hammer River Restoration Project

Tender description

Kent County Council requires a contractor to conduct the following work: The works will involve the restoration of a 750 metre reach of the Hammer Stream at Ayleswade Farm, Kent. The Hammer Stream forms part of the Beult catchment and is managed by the Upper Medway Internal Drainage Board. The channel through Ayleswade Farm has been managed for land drainage and flood defence and years of clearance and dredging has resulted in a deeply incised channel, with vertical banks and almost complete disconnection from the flood plain in all but high flow conditions. It is intended that restoration work will create an improved gradient to the banks and create marginal habitat to create a meandering low flow channel. Pulling back the tops of the banks will help to maintain the same, or possibly greater, channel capacity. The low level margins will provide increased roughness to the channel and help to slow the flow of water during peak flow conditions, helping to reduce flood risk downstream.
