Tender description

Network Rail is seeking a supplier to dispose of hazardous wood containing creosote and CCA in a safe and legal way that can be demonstrated to comply with all relevant legislation (e.g. Waste and Incineration Directive). The wood is removed from the infrastructure by Network Rail and taken to depots at Westbury, Whitemoor and Crewe. In future, the wood may be taken to other rail depots around the UK. The wood will need to be collected from these locations by vehicles with the appropriate permits. The wood is a mix of hazardous wood (e.g. treated with creosote or copper chromium arsenic), with and without metal. Over the past year, there has been an average of 250 tonnes per month, but this varies month-by-month and year-by-year dependant on the work undertaken by Network Rail on its infrastructure. The wood must not be disposed of to landfill nor must it be added to non-hazardous chips to dilute the hazardous content. Network Rail must exercise a duty of care over the disposal and requires transparency of the each step in the disposal route. Network Rail therefore has a preference for a single supplier to be responsible for both the transport and dispose of the waste.
