Pre-qualification, High Current Induction & DC Superimposed Impulse Test Rigs

ORE Catapult is seeking build on its capability to test HV cable systems at its testing facility in Blyth, Northumberland and as such is seeking to establish three (3) new test rigs for: • Pre-qualification (PQ) testing of submarine export cables in alternating current (AC). Able to accommodate testing of cables up to a maximum length of 150m with potential voltage levels of interest. It is also anticipated that this will be used to test cables with simulated submarine operational stresses including accelerated aging and thermal cycling. • High Current Induction able to accommodate testing of cables up to a maximum length of 150m with potential voltage levels of interest. It is also anticipated that this will be used to test cables with simulated submarine operational stresses including accelerated aging and thermal cycling; and • Superimposed impulse testing of High Voltage (HV) direct current (DC) cables using the ORE Catapult’ existing 1 MV DC power supply to carry out superimposed impulse testing. ORE Catapult already operate the following equipment in its laboratories which can be used, in part, for testing: • 1400 kV (max charging voltage), 70 kJ lightning Impulse (LI) generator for LI and switching impulse (SI) testing • DC supply (Hipotronics, 1MV, 5mA continuous, 10 mA cyclic) that can provide HV DC voltage (with polarity reversal) for the DC PQ testing Keywords: High Current Induction
