Domestic Combustion Research

Tender description

The aim of this research is to gain a further understanding of domestic combustion behaviours, attitudes and motivations. The research will serve to develop Defra’s understanding of solid fuel usage in the UK and will enable a reduction in the uncertainty around current emissions inventory estimates in this area. Through addressing gaps in the evidence-base it will serve to shape policy-making, with the overall aim of supporting the UK’s steps to meeting international commitments to significantly reduce damaging emissions. More specifically, the research will inform a number of strands of Defra’s work, including: • Improving estimates of domestic combustion contained it the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) ; • Improving understanding of historic domestic combustion activity with a view to assessing the robustness of the 2005 baseline on which current international commitments are based; • Improving accuracy of emissions mapping; • Informing policy development on domestic combustion, including on: o The promotion of better burning practices o The targeting of any behaviour change interventions o The targeting of any communications Initial data on attitudes and behaviours are needed as soon as possible to inform policy development for the 2018 Clean Air Strategy.
