This project will subject the main Welsh fisheries within Welsh waters out to 12nm to a MSC pre-assessment, the first stage, of a full assessment which will review targated fisheriesin the context of the MSC's principles and criteria of sustainable fishing, identify fisheries likely to comply with the MSC principles and criteria for ‘well managed fisheries’ and identify the main issues likely to prevent a fishery achieving MSC certification. Project proposal This project will subject the main Welsh fisheries within Welsh waters out to 12nm to a MSC pre-assessment, the first stage, of a full assessment which will review the fisheries listed below in the context of the MSC's principles and criteria of sustainable fishing, identify fisheries likely to comply with the MSC principles and criteria for ‘well managed fisheries’ and identify the main issues likely to prevent a fishery achieving MSC certification. The target fisheries (split into first & second order priorities) for review are shown in Table 1. 2. Scope of work There will be three elements to the project: an overview of each fishery; a pre-MSC assessment; and, action plans for two fisheries, which are described in more detail below. 2.1 Overview of each fishery A review of each of the target fisheries will include: — A description of the fishery; — A review of the target species; — The wider impact on the; — The main governance and management characteristics of the fishery. 2.2 Pre-MSC Assessment In accordance with MSC guidelines, the evaluation and score for each target fishery against each of the performance indicators will be undertaken for each of the 3 MSC principles together with justification and rationale. 2.3 Fisheries Improvement Plans Fisheries Improvement plans (FIP) for two Welsh fisheries will be based on the outcome of the pre-MSC assessment and detail specific actions and incorporate into an action plan for improvement linked to the MSC Performance Indicators (PI) and scoring Guideposts to increase scoring up to the SG80 level of best practice.
