Porous membranes used commercially for gas and liquid separations typically have a composite structure comprising of a non-woven base support, a microporous polymer support layer and a very thin molecular-selective porous active layer. The polymer support layer is essential to provide mechanical stability to the thin active layer as well as having a significant influence on the selective and permeation properties of the whole composite membrane, while high accuracy in coating the thin active layer is essential to achieve the optimum separation properties required. A membrane coating machine is required at the University to facilitate the in-house production of continuous rolls of porous supports and the roll to roll production of thin film composite membrane webs. The coating machine must be constructed of high grade, chemically resistant stainless steel capable of withstanding potentially aggressive aqueous and organic reagents.
