Carnmoney Cemetery Main Proposed Subterranean Installation

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has a Legal Obligation to provide burial provisions within the extents of the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Area. Currently Council undertakes circa 1100 burials per annum across various cemetery sites. The largest and most popular cemetery in the Borough is located at Carnmoney where it serves the high density population areas of Glengormley Urban, Macedon and Three Mile Water. The existing cemetery provisions at Carnmoney are nearing capacity and there are circa 100 plots remaining to be utilised across the Carnmoney sites. In order to address this shortfall in burial plots Council has decided to pursue the utilisation of a subterranean type shoring system which will allow graves to be located at closer centres without fear of collapse. This approach will permit effective utilisation of the remaining available lands within the current cemeteries.
