Summary of the work HMLR is seeking an experienced and skilled service designer to provide input into the design of new and iterated services and also mentor and coach its existing designers This role would suit senior designers, or mid-weights who have managed other designers. Specialist role Designer Expected Contract Length 6 months Latest start date 27/02/2017 Maximum Day Rate £650 Who Speclialist Work With User researchers and content designers (as part of multidisciplinary digital delivery teams) plus the wider design community at HMLR and other government departments. What Specialists Work On (1) Provide input into the design of new and iterated HMLR digital services on GOV.UK (2) mentor and coach HMLR's existing designers Skills & Experience • Experience of designing and iterating user-centred services that meet cross-government standards and patterns • Ability to sketch and prototype effectively on paper and in HTML • Experience of translating user research into actionable insights that remove complexity from services • A design-related degree or significant relevant industry experience Nice to Haves • Demonstrably active in the cross-govt design community; sharing and contributing to design patterns • Experience representing digital services at service standard assessments • Able to code beyond basic html/css; eg using GOV.UK prototyping kit to create hi-fidelity prototypes • Experience of designing fully accessible and device-agnostic services Work Location Plymouth Working Arrangments Onsite minimum 4 days/week - travel expenses to be met from advertised rate Security Clearance Basic clearance No. of Specialists to Evaluate 6 Cultural Fit Criteria • Focuses on meeting user needs to deliver organisational goals/policy intent • Experience in coaching and/or mentoring less experienced designers • Hands-on experience of working at pace on government digital services as part of a multidisciplinary agile team • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain ideas in a way that others understand Evaluation Weighting Technical competence 60% Cultural fit 20% Price 20% Questions from Suppliers 1. In light of recent legislative changes to be invoked, can you confirm whether this assignment would fall inside or outside of IR35? We will be contracting with the selected organisation to deliver this service and not the individual therefore IR35 should not apply and the responsibility should sit with the contracting organisation.
