B4058 Horsley Hill Slip, Highway Remediation Scheme

Tender description

The B4058 at Horsley Hill, south of Nailsworth, is currently operating as a single carriageway under lights due to a slope failure. The slope originally showed signs of cracking and initial movement in early 2013, at which time investigations were undertaken and a review of information completed to provide options for remediation. However, before remedial measures had been progressed a major slope failure occurred at the end of 2013. The site is located on the B4058 at Horsley Hill, a few hundred metres to the north of the village of Horsley, at Grid Reference ST 841 982, in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire. It is approximately 2km to the southwest of the town of Nailsworth, and 6km south of Stroud. The road runs northeast to southwest, the land falling from west to east, with the road lying on the westerly side of a steep sided valley. The area of interest is within a steep sided, wooded and vegetated valley. It is proposed to reinstate the road back to a two lane carriageway by planing/excavating the existing highway to a depth of 1800mm and installing 95m of pre-cast concrete ‘L’ sections secured to the underlying rock. To enable these works a road closure will need to be arranged and a Severn Trent water main will need to be temporarily diverted through the works.
