London Underground is proposing to replace the current fluorescent saloon lighting on the following trains with a more modern LED or similar lighting solution: • Central Line – 92 TS (85 x 8 car trains) • Waterloo & City Line – 92 TS (5 x 4 car trains) Historically fluorescent tube lighting for railway rolling stock saloons and other applications was used because it had better efficiency than that of filament lamps. However, with the introduction of LED technology and its continuing cost reduction, fluorescent tubes will unlikely be fitted on future rolling stock. Overview •The design objective is to fit within the existing space envelope and to use the existing mechanical fixings and electrical power where practical • Use of integrated light diffuser panels to avoid tunnel dust build up and reduce the cleaning • Must operate with the existing electrical supply (the voltage is normally regulated between -53 & -54DC but can range widely) • Materials to be fire resistant, pass emissions and be compliant with fire precautions in the design and construction of passenger carrying trains.
