Large Scale Cryogenic Pumping System. The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. The Authority has a requirement for a large scale Cryogenic Pumping system. The system will comprise of large pumping ‘panels’ and will use the principle of molecular Cryo-condensation to pump deuterium and hydrogen gas with a pumping speed in the region of 1 million litres/second. The vacuum vessel to be pumped is approximately 3 m by 2 m by 3.5 m in size. The pumping panels will be mounted inside the vessel on the two opposite walls which are 3 by 3.5 m. The system must be ultra-high vacuum compatible. The scope of work for the production of the Cryo-pump system could include (but is not limited to): concept design work encompassing gas pumping calculations, production of CAD models, production of the manufacturing drawings, manufacture of all jigs and fixtures, manufacture of system components to final dimensions, qualification of processes, inspection and testing of all components, cleaning to UHV standards, installation of the system in the vacuum vessel and commissioning tests. The Authority will conduct a dialogue with the marketplace. This may result in a call for competition based on the content of the requirement achieved through the dialogue.
