Adam Bridge is situated approximately one kilometre north west of Wigan town centre where A49 splits up and Ormskirk Road crosses River Douglas taking outbound traffic travelling in westerly direction from town centre. Adam Bridge carries the A49 Ormskirk Road over the River Douglas. Grid reference: 357118 (E), 405156 (N) The site location is illustrated in the attached location plan. This bridge under the carriageway is simply supported Precast Pre-stressed concrete inverted ‘T5’ beams with insitu infill concrete deck . The pipe bays under the footways and stringcourses are supported by concrete encased steel universal beams The concrete bridge abutments are carried by 500mm. diameter reinforced concrete bored insitu piles. Bridge parapets consist of solid masonry stones reused from the original bridge. Stone river training wall exists on upstream and downstream sides of the bridge except in the north east corner on upstream side where river embankment exists. The road over the bridge is a four-lane one way carriageway. The works will be phased so that temporary restricted running shall be arranged and implemented by the Contractor. The structural maintenance works comprises: Exposing the concrete on the steel bridge deck under the carriageway, prepare this surface to accept replacing the bridge buried joints, re-waterproofing of the bridge deck and road resurfacing works.
