The LGMA requires a communications company to advise and assist them through the Office for Local Authority Management (OLAM), to respond to media queries and try and influence media on positive stories for the sector. This assistance should enable the local authority sector to take a leading, coherent, prominent and constructive part in the Local Government Reform debate while providing an opportunity to discuss and publicise the necessary and significant changes and efficiencies that the sector has achieved and continues to achieve. It will also assist in improving the visibility of local government services and reinforce the vital role of local authorities within communities. Key to this understanding is an appreciation by the communications company of the ‘uniqueness’ of the politically sensitive environment in which the LGMA operates and the necessary constraints and limits that this imposes in its public communications.
