Tender description

Barts Health intends to purchase a robotic-assisted surgical system for its St Barts and Royal London sites plus associated maintenance and consumables. Barts Health NHS Trust intends to enter into a contract with Intuitive Surgical as being the only option meeting our requirements. In accordance with our interpretation of the Public Contracts Regulations 2015, the services can be provided only by this particular provider for technical reasons, and competition is therefore absent for technical reasons due to the unique essential requirements of the equipment required, namely Intuitive Surgical is currently the only manufacturer of commercially available robotic-assisted surgical systems offering robotic four-arm multi-port technology and a suite of fully wristed 8 mm instrumentation, wristed advanced energy and stapling instruments, fluorescence imaging, integrated table motion, and skills simulation, all on a single platform, capable of performing minimally invasive surgical procedures. Due to the above functionality, the system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements of the master controls into precise, real-time movements of the wristed instrumentation that are designed with seven degrees of motion — a range of motion even greater than the human wrist. The vision system is equipped with a high-definition, 3D endoscope and image processing equipment that provides true-to-life images of the patient's anatomy. A view of the operating field is available to the entire operating room team on a large viewing monitor. This wide-screen view provides the surgical assistant at the patient's side with a broad perspective and visualisation of the procedure while the surgeon operates seated at a console with the master controls viewing a high definition, 3D image inside the patient's body. The Intuitive Surgical da Vinci system remains the most ubiquitous robot designed to facilitate complex minimally invasive surgery across multiple specialties and in multiple body compartments. The Intuitive Surgical da Vinci has been the subject of more than 7 000 peer-reviewed publications and studies, with a wealth of regulatory approvals covering a wide spectrum of surgical procedures—much greater than alternatives with lesser functionality available on the market. No other commercially available surgical robot facilitates the multidisciplinary applications planned for Barts Health NHS Trust.
