Main Contractor for the construction of the New Music Centre at the University of St Andrews. Main Contractor for the New Music Centre project at the University of St Andrews. The University of St Andrews Music Centre provides exceptional musical opportunities for students and staff of the University and for the wider community of Fife. It has been based in the Younger Hall since its foundation, 25 years ago, but now, for the first time, it will have a purpose-built home. The new Music Centre will be in the heart of the medieval University, in St Mary's Quadrangle, and will provide the dedicated space needed for musicians to learn, practice, rehearse and perform. The accommodation will include: — A large rehearsal studio suitable for both orchestral and choral rehearsal, which will also be a performance space for chamber works and song. — Three medium-sized spaces in which the Centre's many instrumental and vocal groups can rehearse. — Ten practice rooms for individual and small group practice and for lessons from the Centre's internationally renowned teaching staff. — A music technology and recording suite enabling the Centre's musicians to develop their skills in these rapidly developing areas of music. — A library bringing together the Centre's resources in recorded and printed music for the first time. — Dedicated office space for the Centre's performance, academic and administrative staff. The proposed Gross External Areas are: Ground Floor: 901 m² First Floor: 608 m² Second Floor: 427 m² Roof: 255 m² Total 2191 m² Car parking spaces: 33 Site layout: The site layout is designed to optimize the prominent location of the site. The Centre will restore an historic quad and preserve the features of St Mary's Quadrangle, while complementing the neighbouring St Regulus Hall student residence and the Bute Building. This is a music centre for the community and the University — and as such its location with easy access for all from the town centre and its welcoming and outward looking appearance will create a new cultural venue in St Andrews. Parking is located to the east of the site, easily accessible from Queen's Terrace and in close proximity to the main entrance. Parked vehicles will be concealed from view at Ground level within the Music Centre by means of a planted screen with a wall beyond. Vehicular access is maintained to the south of the site at the existing entrance to the University. The refuse store is located between the car park and the music centre on the south east corner to facilitate ease of servicing. A combination of hard and soft landscaping is provided within the site.
