X. NHSBT is considering options for replacement irradiators that conform to a new User Requirement Specification being developed (to be published as part of an Invitation to Tender if viable alternatives to Gamma irradiators are available). Broadly, this will differ from previous irradiator requirements in at least the following 3 ways: — An irradiator that meets the other mandatory requirements of NHSBT's User Requirement Specification without use of a radioisotope e.g. Caesium-137, Cobalt-60. — An X-ray irradiator that requires power only — no other services can be guaranteed, e.g. cooling by tap water or externally mounted cooling system. — An X-ray irradiator that has a guaranteed tube life of 5 years* (or tubes are included within the maintenance contract) to ensure minimum disruption and maximum value for money. *NHSBT is still developing its specification. This figure is subject to change depending on the options available on the market.
