The Liverpool Active City Strategy 2014-21 sets out the City’s strategic vision to become the Most Active Core City in England by 2021. The Strategy was developed by the Strategic Stakeholder Group including Liverpool Public Health and Liverpool CCG, and adopted by the Health and Wellbeing Board in 2014. As Sport England’s 2012-14 baseline data shows, Liverpool is the 6th most active core City based on participation in sport and active recreation by people aged 16+. The primary outcome of the strategy is to enable more people to become active for a minimum of 30 minutes at least once per week. Physical activity directly contributes to over 2,600 preventable health events per year amongst our city’s residents. According to Sport England the cost of physical inactivity to Liverpool is currently £10.8m per year. Through achieving the vision, stakeholders aim to make a significant impact on health and wellbeing of the population, due to the evidence-based benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle. The inclusion of physical activity as part of Liverpool’s Integrated Universal Offer for Health is a priority for the city’s Health and Wellbeing Board. Whilst Liverpool has demonstrated some success over the past 2 years in improving levels of participation amongst the 16+ population it is recognised that a significant step change is required to mainstream an approach to engage the Liverpool population in living a more active lifestyle.
