Tender description

The University of the West of England is preparing to tender for the collection and treatment of various types of hazardous wastes. The tender will be separated into 5 different lots: — Lot 1 — Collection of contaminated laboratory waste, including collection of sharps boxes: regular scheduled collections. — Lot 2 — Collection of hazardous wastes and chemical smalls: on-request collections. — Lot 3 — Collection of hazardous WEEE: fridges/freezers. — Lot 4 — Collection of portable batteries. — Lot 5 — Collection of fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps. It is intended that contract periods shall cover an initial period of three years with the option to extending annually for a further two years. This is subject to satisfactory annual performance reviews of the contracted supplier(s) and the business needs of the University. We require a laboratory waste and sharps disposal service. We have four locations where such waste currently arises: three separate locations at Frenchay campus and one at Glenside campus. The University generates a quantity of miscellaneous hazardous waste chemicals consisting of the following examples: — Solvents (chlorinated and unchlorinated), — waste oils, coolants and fuels, — contaminated lab glass, — casting and printing resins, — HEPA and carbon filters, — contaminated filters, — bulk mixed paints, — aerosols. The University generates a number of broken and old fridge freezers during the course of a year. These are predominantly from the university accommodation, although on occasions we do also have specialist retail and scientific refrigeration equipment to dispose of. The University generates significant numbers of waste portable batteries. These are predominantly domestic type batteries, although on occasions we do also have more specialist batteries to dispose of. Total quantity varies between 250 kg and 500 kg per year; the batteries are collected by UWE staff from containers at multiple collection points around the university and placed in a central container located in the Facilities Service Yard, Frenchay Campus. The container holds around 500 kg of batteries and is collected approximately once per year. The University generates significant numbers of waste fluorescent tubes and CFLs. To give an indication of quantity in 2014/15 we disposed of 2.5 tonnes of these. There are two collection points: one at Frenchay Campus (BS34 8QZ) and one at Glenside Campus (BS16 1DD). We currently have three steel coffin type containers — two at Frenchay Facilities Service Yard and one at Glenside waste compound.
