The Met Office is the UK's National Weather Service, providing a range of products and services to a large number of public and private sector organisations. At the heart of the capability of the Met Office to generate products and services is the meteorological observation. The data gathered at Automated Weather Observing Stations (AWOS) are critical to the accuracy of the forecast model. The Met Office is currently in the process of designing the next generation of surface environmental monitoring network, SurfaceNet, for which we have around 5000 sensors located at over 300 sites with varied infrastructure situated around the UK and abroad. The current vision is to use ‘Platform as a Service’ components from a cloud vendor utilising Internet of Things (IoT) services for the connection of devices, device management (including command and control) and the collection of telemetry. The Met Office is looking to engage with system integrators or manufacturers to assist with the design and manufacture of (or to procure off the shelf) devices required to integrate with our current (and potential future) suite of sensors allowing them to connect, transmit telemetry and engineering data as well as react to device management requests from the chosen platform as a service. This element of SurfaceNet has been termed the Sensor Interface. This PIN is the start of a period of Early Supplier Market Engagement/Market Souding that will enable the Met Office to get a fuller understanding of what the telemetry, sensor interface and Internet of Things devices market can deliver in terms of its own business objectives.
