Tender description

Network Rail is seeking to engage with manufacturers of composite (recycled plastic) railway sleepers to understand what is available that meets operational requirements. Network Rail currently uses in the region of 65 000 wooden sleepers each year, split between softwood and hardwood. The composite sleepers are intended primarily as a replacement for softwood (creosote treated) sleepers, although they could potentially act as a replacement for hardwood sleepers and bearers as well. It is Network Rail's intention to carry out lab-testing, followed by a trial and then if successful a wider rollout following a tender process.
