Analysis & Testing of Vulnerable Road User Detection Systems

Tender description

The research of emerging in-vehicle road safety technologies and the making of recommendations on their introduction is action item 64 of the Road Safety Strategy 2013-2020. To date the RSA has carried out extensive research of road traffic collisions involving heavy commercial vehicles (HCV’s) and vulnerable road users (VRU’s), in particular cyclists. The RSA has also previously investigated emerging PCD technologies which have the capability to alert a driver if a vulnerable road user is moving close to or is in a hazardous position next to their vehicle, in particular in ‘blind spots’. Due to many of the aforementioned technologies being in their infancy at the time of the RSA’s investigation, there was insufficient test results available to make recommendations on them. Therefore the RSA wishes to procure the services of an external contractor to carry out a study of the current technology available in this regard and make recommendations on such technology having carried out necessary trials.
