100m Extension of Track at Pewsey Wood National Nature Reserve (NNR) Background to Natural England: Natural England is the government’s advisor on the natural environment. We provide practical advice, grounded in science, on how best to safeguard England’s natural wealth for the benefit of everyone. Background to this contract: Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve (NNR) is one 224 NNRs in England. As well as being important wildlife sites NNRs also play an important role in providing access to nature. At Pewsey Downs a previously installed section of concrete track on NE land is leading to erosion of a shared unsurfaced access track (affecting our neighbours land and the use of this track by our neighbours and others with access rights) and enrichment of SSSI grassland from run off. Extending the concrete track by 100m would enable the control of run off and prevent these problems. The works comprise the construction of a new unreinforced concrete road to be built on the existing access track within the National Nature Reserve (NNR) at Pewsey, Wiltshire. The existing access track comprises of hard-core, which was laid over chalk sub grade about twenty to twenty five year ago. This hard-core track surface has suffered heavy scouring, erosion and washes out of fines, as a result of surface water run off occurring during heavy rainfall.
