KMCEGS - 033 Provision of Stray Dog Collection and Kennelling Services, 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2020 with provision to extend for a further 12 month period

Tenders are invited by the Council from Tenderers with relevant experience able to demonstrate sufficient capacity and skill for the provision of stray dog collection and kennelling services.The Council , like all councils has a duty under the Environmental Protection Act to kennel stray dogs for a minimum of seven days. Kirklees have also historically offered a service to collect strays. Each year we collect approximately 400 stray dogs from around the district. A significant number of these strays have been microchipped or have collars which enable us to very quickly identify the owners and to immediately return the dogs to them. When we cannot identify the owner the dog is taken to a kennel. Whilst the dog is in the kennel we must make reasonable efforts to either reunite the dog and owner or to re-home the dog if the owner cannot be found or will not have the dog back . After seven days, if the dog has not been rehomed we have the choice of destroying the animal, although where there is a reasonable probability that the dog will find a home we frequently choose to continue to kennel it until a new owner is found in order to maintain our on-going performance and service to the people of Kirklees, it is critical that the Council maintains optimum levels of service to its residents.
