Equipment required to enable the additive manufacturing of metal components, by a powder-bed based process, of interest to aerospace, medical and automotive sectors. Will be used in post-grad taught programmes with the Materials and Manufacturing Academy, industrial research and undergraduate projects. Engineering hope to develop the manufacturing process in collaboration with the equipment manufacturer in areas of expertise such as computational modelling, materials development and characterisation, so fully accessible machine parameters, flexible software and build sizes are important. Ability for automated and safe powder handling is important for teaching-related activities, and the capability to build components in standard alloys for specific applications.
