Central Area Team (CAT) is part of the Transport Strategy and Programmes Section. CAT is responsible for managing all major highway and transport projects in the city centre. The team is also responsible for traffic issues in the city centre (which includes working with bus and other public transport services, pedestrianisation, traffic regulation orders and general traffic management) and for signing across the whole city. It also provides advice on engineering contract and procurement issues. Belvoir Street Highway Improvement Scheme is part of the wider Connecting Leicester Programme. Its aim is to create a high quality environment across the city centre linking places that people want to visit and to create a city centre that will help secure the economic prosperity of the whole city. This includes resin footways with bituminous carriageway construction. There will be provisions for cyclist to travel south along Belvoir Street to Granby St in the form of a segregated cycle lane and shared spaces. The underground mapping will provide valuable information on the location of existing services under the footway and road to assist with the design of the road profile and determine any utility works which may be required prior to starting on site saving any potential delays to the works. These could be in the form of diversionary or protection works, these surveys are also valuable with regards to the health and safety of the contractor’s operatives, as they provide information relating to the identification and location of the various buried ducts and services where operatives are likely to be working.
