Tender description
Contract for the supply and maintenance of liquid nitrogen vessels for the storage of human tissue and cells for human application, research and IVDD products. (A) Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT). NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) supports approximately 40 % of stem cell transplants in England. CMT provides a range of services to support haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. The provision of this service includes the storage of stem cell products at <-150OC using liquid nitrogen cryogenic storage vessels. The NHSBT stem cell laboratories are currently located at Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Sheffield and Southampton. (B) NHS Cord Blood Bank. The NHS Cord Blood Bank is increasing the number of umbilical cord blood units banked in the UK to a target of 50 000. The NHS Cord Blood Bank is based in Bristol. (C) Tissue Services. NHSBT Tissue Services use liquid nitrogen storage vessels for the storage of skin heart valves and other tissues for human application. The NHSBT Tissue Bank is based in Liverpool. (D) Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI). Reagents is a sub function of RCI. Reagents manufacture products for use in Hospital Transfusion Laboratories and in NHSBT Testing and Reference Laboratories. These products are used in blood grouping and antibody investigation procedures. The products are manufactured from red cell donations of specific phenotypes. Due to the rarity of the phenotypes in the UK population the cells are stored in Liquid Nitrogen in cryogenic storage vessels after donation ready for use in manufacture. The NHSBT Reagents is located at Liverpool. (E) International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL). IBGRL provide specialist clinical diagnostic services for red cell reference and molecular diagnostics. IBGRL also develop reagents and monoclonal antibodies. Priceless red cells and hybridoma cells are stored in liquid nitrogen. IBGRL is located in Bristol. (F) Bristol Institute for Transfusion Sciences (BITS). BITS is a major part of NHSBT research activity, contributing to a range of research programmes. Cells manufactured as part of this research are stored in liquid nitrogen. BITS is located in Bristol.
