Tender description
This project is part of the Natural Course LIFE Integrated Project. The objective of the Natural Course LIFE Integrated Project is to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive NW River Basin Management Plan by building the strategic capacities needed in authorities and stakeholders. This will lead to new ways of working that will make protecting water resources in the NW more achievable and more affordable. The work will comprise a study which will assess the best options available for the restoration of Coledale Beck and Newlands Beck (Stair to Bassenthwaite Lake) in Cumbria. There rivers are upland, high energy, gravel bed rivers. The study will assess the various techniques available to achieve river restoration which would facilitate natural geomorphological processes both within channel and in terms of floodplain interaction. The rivers identified within this study have been identified within the Cumbria flood partnership as having the potential to reduce flood risk to Braithwaite village. The Braithwaite catchment has been identified as a pilot catchment for flood management and as such the study will need to involve community engagement and modelling to indicate flood alleviation potential of the restoration options proposed.
