Irish C.gigas Tetraploid Broodstock Pool for Selective Breeding Programmes for Irish Oyster Hatcheries

BIM would now like to invite tenders for the provision of disease free tetraploid C.gigas broodstock, produced in an Irish hatchery using stock adapted to Irish conditions in a disease free area, to be used in selection programmes by Irish hatcheries which will focus on growth performance, survivability and quality. Tetraploid stock must have been produced through one or other or both of the following methods: a) the crossing of mature triploid male and diploid female oysters, all of which have been certified as coming from disease free Irish waters and the inhibition of the extrusion of the first polar body to produce putative tetraploid embryos b) the conditioning and crossing of mature tetraploid male and female oysters, produced from triploid and diploid broodstock of Irish origin as above, to produce second generation tetraploids. Evidence of ploidy must be provided from the use of flow cytometry. This contract will run from January 2016 to December 2016. Subject to a performance review and available budgets, the contract may, at the sole discretion of BIM be extended for a further one year
