The contract is for the cleaning of the market as well as waste management which includes collection of waste, recycling and disposal. Waste generated on site equals, on average, 12 — 13000 tonnes of mixed associated market waste per year i.e. organic, cardboard, timber, plastic, polystyrene etc. Within the contract there is an emphasis on 0 % landfill, over 95 % recycling, and cost reductions/incomes regarding recyclables. The market operates for trading 6 days a week and due to the nature of the business, contractor's staff are employed 24/6 in order to ensure that cleaning and waste management are proactively managed. The cleaning aspect of the contract relates to common areas within the main 309 000 ft2 wholesale pavilion; all roadways; all external distribution areas connected to the 40 000 ft2 Catering Supply Buildings area; some 1000000 ft2 of parking areas; all of which are required to meet the exacting standards of all relevant Food Hygiene and Health and Safety legislation.
