Tender description

The objective of the services is the cutting or flailing of vegetation on restoration works sites around the Peak District and South Pennines Special Area of Conservation. The objective of the contract is the cutting or flailing of vegetation on restoration works sites around the Peak District and South Pennines Special Area of Conservation, in order to construct fire breaks, reduce the dominance of particular species and/or facilitate the re-introduction of new species by opening up the sward. a. Flailing for firebreaks i. To be carried out down to no lower than 3 cm above ground level on average. ii. Some scalping is acceptable but the soil surface must not be significantly disturbed. iii. Cut Material to be collected or piled up in windrows approximately 4 metres apart to allow it to break down (as specified by the Nominated Officer). b. Flailing to diversify sward i. To be carried out at approximately ground level. ii. Must disturb the soil to allow successful germination following subsequent seeding. iii. Cut Material to be collected or left as an even layer mixed with the disturbed soil, which will give a suitable seed bed for seeding (as specified by the Nominated Officer). All Material must be well chopped. c. Vegetation types i. Cottongrass-dominant: may be wet (requiring a low ground pressure Machine), but likely to be easy to cut ii. Heather-dominant: probably drier ground; grips or gullies may be present. iii. Molinia-dominant: likely to be wet, with tough tussocks of molinia. d. The location of each line that is cut or flailed must be recorded with a GPS unit and the GIS information must be promptly given to the Nominated Officer.
