Zambia has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world with an under-5 stunting rate of 40 %. In its commitment to address the problem, the Government of Zambia (GRZ) developed the national First 1000 Most Critical Days Programme (MCDP) whose aim is to reduce stunting as well as build blocks for a coherent and sustainable nation-wide response to undernutrition. 2. Since 2013, DFID in collaboration with Sida and Irish Aid has supported implementation of the First 1000 MCDP through the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Fund. The SUN Fund is a joint financing mechanism established to facilitate resource alignment to support implementation of the national nutrition program. The next phase of the SUN Fund is underway and will involve contributions from several donors. The Fund is expected to initially provide US$30 million from 2017 to 2021 but the threshold will increase with more donors joining the Fund. 3. The SUN Fund comprises two key components, the first of which is applicable to this programme of work: i) Fund management to involve sub-granting for delivery of locally proven high-impact direct and indirect nutrition interventions to improve maternal, infant and young child feeding practices to reduce stunting in priority districts countrywide; and ii) Technical assistance to support the National Food and Nutrition Commission's (NFNC) institutional restructuring for effective coordination, programming, domestic resource mobilisation, and monitoring and evaluation of the multi-sectoral nutrition response to address stunting. This is likely to be managed by another donor, further details to be released on this.
