Rapid Evidence Assessment: Social and Political Discourses about Child Sexual Abuse

The REA should identify, review and synthesise existing high-quality literature on the social and political discourses about child sexual abuse in England and Wales. The aim of this research is to assist IICSA in understanding the ways in which evolving social discourses, norms, and attitudes around childhood, child sexuality and child sexual abuse may have shaped institutional responses to the issue in different ways over time. The insight generated by this REA will help to inform IICSA’s investigative work, and longer term reports. The overarching question that this project should answer using the existing literature is: What can the existing evidence tell us about the social and political discourses concerning child sexual abuse in England and Wales from the 1940s to the present day, and the ways in which those discourses may have influenced institutional responses to such abuse?
