Tender description

NPL is establishing World class precision component manufacturing and measurement facilities. To develop this new NPL Engineering facility a number of machine tools are required to replace existing machine tools. The nature of instrument manufacturing at NPL requires that machine tools are effective for production of one-off and low number batches of components with a wide variety of size, geometry and materials and often with demanding tolerance specifications. Material specifications will include a wide range of metals and non-metallic materials. Metals will include a wide range of aluminium alloys, stainless steels, titanium, carbon steels, coppers, brass, nickel based super alloys and other special metal alloys. The range of plastic materials to be machined will include various grades of nylon, Polyaryletheretherketone (PEEK™), PTFE, acetal, acrylic, polycarbonate and a variety of other specialist plastics and plastic composites. In developing the engineering facility investment has been made in upgrading CAM software and therefor the machines supplied must be fully compatible with current CAM software packages while also providing effective state of the art interactive conversational on machine programming.
