Tender description

A point of care testing device that will be used to assess the patient's coagulation factors in an emergency haemorrhage situation. The point of care coagulation testing device would be used during the management of patients who experience major haemorrhage to allow timely assessments of the patient clotting status allowing detection and management abnormal coagulation more effectively. Specifically, it allows provision of rapid, targeted, administration of blood products to correct acquired coagulation defects and more rapidly cease ongoing bleeding. Currently management relies on laboratory coagulation results that take a relatively long time (usually 1 hour) to process. These do not provide a timely picture of the patients clotting status in ongoing major haemorrhage. Often blood products are administered empirically based on estimated blood loss, which is notoriously inaccurate, while awaiting the coagulation results. This results in a large proportion of patients receiving unnecessary blood and blood products and the associated short and long term health risks of transfusion.
