Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group are leading on a challenging behaviour strategy for people with disabilities. Initially the objective of the strategy was to improve the support and life opportunities for people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. It has formed part of Gloucestershire’s response to the Department of Health’s requirement that local areas strategically address the needs of people with challenging behaviour to prevent the use of specialist services like Winterbourne View in future years. The Challenging Behaviour Strategy is looking to extend the remit of the training to incorporate other disabilities, as well as learning disabilities. This is inline with Building Better Lives Policy, Gloucestershire County Council’s ten year disability strategy. In order to achieve this we are looking to commission workshops which can be tailored to staff supporting individuals with autism, acquired brain injury and/or ADHD who display behaviour that challenges. To date the training provided has specifically related to learning disabilities and we welcome innovative ideas in how to effectively expand this.
