Long Sutton Main Drain Footbridge Refurbishment

Tender description

This pre-construction information is for the refurbishment of a footbridge over Long Sutton Main Drain near Pibsbury in South Somerset. The footbridge connects public footpath L 21/50 in the Parish of Long Sutton. The bridge is constructed of 2 main steel beams, steel diagonal cross bracing and steel angular uprights and steel parapet bracing. The bridge is clad in softwood timber including 2 bearers along the main beams, deck boards, two handrails attached to both parapet uprights and step over stiles at both ends of the bridge. There is also stock proof netting attached to both ends of the bridge. The bridge sits on concrete stepped pads. The main beams are set within the concrete pads holding the bridge in place. The steels are painted black. The age of the bridge is unknown. The paint work on the bridge is deteriorating resulting in surface rust on all the steel elements of the bridge. In addition the softwood timber cladding is suffering from rot, severe in places. Works include breaking out the steels from the concrete pads, stripping and disposing of the timber elements, preparing and galvanising the steel work, forming new concrete bank seats with steps, fixing the bridge back into place and installing gates and rails at each end of the bridge.
