HIE recognises that energy, and in particular renewable energy, offers the region a once in a generation opportunity for significant economic and community growth. The Highlands and Islands already has an international reputation for its energy industry, dating back to the hydro revolution of the 1940s and the oil and gas fabrication boom of the 1970s, and more recently has led in renewable energy and particularly in offshore renewables (offshore wind, wave and tidal energy). The region is home to a number of world-1sts, including: the wave power station at Islay; EMEC, the world's 1st grid-connected wave and tidal test centre; Beatrice, the world's 1st deep water offshore wind farm; and most recently in 2015 work began to prepare the site for the deployment of the world's 1st tidal stream project in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth. In support of this, HIE and its industry partners have developed a ‘HI-energy’ brand name, distinct from Highlands and Islands Enterprise's own identity, specifically for the energy sector in the Highlands and Islands. ‘HI-energy’ is used at exhibitions as an umbrella brand for the Highlands and Islands region. HIE is now seeking to appoint a supplier who will design, build and project manage a Highlands and Islands pavilion, under this HI-energy brand at the ‘All-Energy Exhibition and Conference Event’ (www.all-energy.co.uk) at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow in the 1st week of May each year. The HI-energy pavilion encompasses smaller sub-regional pavilions including Argyll and the Islands and Orkney with each area split into stands for a number of individual Highland and Islands based exhibitors. The Orkney pavilion ‘Energy of Orkney’ is the largest, and until recently was standalone, but now also comes under the HI-energy brand / pavilion. It will however maintain some distinction, usually with a different colour carpet and gateways to the area. The HI-energy pavilion will also feature a central lounge area and a manned cafe and will serve to promote the area and its extensive renewable energy offerings including its leading role in offshore renewables, an experienced supply chain and world-class facilities. In addition to the pavilion, HIE means a HI-energy stand that acts as an information point for the wider pavilion. The successful supplier will be expected to design and build this stand — see this year's floor plan for an idea of the position and size of the stand, although this may be subject to change.
