Tender description

Health Trainers was a new policy and workforce initiative established in ‘Choosing Health’ (DH, 2004) and reinforced in ‘Our Health, Our Care, Our Say (DH, 2006). The programme was designed to reduce health inequalities by recruiting workers from the local community to provide local knowledge, signposting and motivate behavioural change across a number of lifestyle issues, including smoking, healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, sexual health and substance misuse (including alcohol). Interventions were targeted at those living and working in deprived areas and members of ‘hard to reach’ groups. Health Trainer Services are identified as a key programme to support the NHS Portsmouth and NHS Hampshire strategic goals of: • reducing health inequalities • commissioning high-quality patient-centred services • improving access to care and services
