DSD/ILEX - Quantify Health's Potential as an Economic Driver

Ilex, the Urban Regeneration Company requires a service provider to conduct a study to Quantify Health's Potential as an Economic Driver. The study’s overarching objective is: ‘To develop a strategy to promote the health sector as a driver for regional economic growth’ The Ilex Regeneration Plan proposed evaluating ‘the contribution of the health sector in order to maximise the potential of health as an economic sector …as an economic development priority’. Five areas were identified in which the health sector could contribute to the economy of the region. These were; i. Maximisation of opportunities to provide medical services to wider catchment area; ii. On-going expansion of range of services provided by major hospitals iii. Further development of medical R+D and training activities including joint initiatives between major hospitals and third-level institutions including the University of Ulster’s Magee Campus iv. Development of ‘medical tourism’ sector including medical and related conferences, and health and ‘wellness’ tourism; v. Further development of private healthcare facilities and centres.
