Iron Bridge Conservation Project - Lead consultant & structural Engineering Services

Tender description

English Heritage is seeking to appoint a conservation accredited structural engineer and lead consultant to lead the design team for the conservation of the Iron Bridge in Telford, Shropshire. The Iron Bridge was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979) in 1934 and Ironbridge Gorge was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The bridge is internationally significant and is listed Grade I under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 for its special architectural or historic interest. The conservation work will require a high level of consultation with Historic England, the local authority and the World Heritage Site Steering Group, plus other key stakeholders throughout the project. The appointed consultant will be required to commence Lead Consultant/engineering services at EH Stage 2 (Design, Planning and Procurement) and see the project through the Delivery stage to Completion. Services will commence immediately after appointment. The appointed consultant will also be required take on or sub-contract the Principal Designer role under the CDM Regulations 2015. A package of work has been approved at feasibility stage which comprises: • repair to the bridge radials • repairs to low level 1902 straps • repairs to the ends of the deck plates • structural repairs to the cast iron frame • masonry repairs to abutments • deck repairs, requiring the excavation of the road, including replacement of missing deck wedges on bearers B, C and D • potential repairs to south span deck plates • replacement of the existing road surface finish • complete redecoration of the bridge.
